Welcome to the Gelders Archief! We manage hundreds of archives from and about the province of Gelderland. Our collection consists of more than 38 kilometres of archival material, 17 million genealogical records and over 200.000 photos, drawings, prints and maps.
Our historical records and our search engine are only available in Dutch. But here we have some information and tips on how to find your way around our website and how to find help with your research.
Online research
Genealogy: Use ‘Personen zoeken’ to search in the database with genealogical resources from the province of Gelderland. This includes civil registration certificates (birth, marriage and death), population registers (inhabitants) and church books (baptisms, marriages and burials). To search through certificates of all Dutch provinces, please go to OpenArch.nl. This website is available in English, French and German.
Images: Use ‘Foto’s en films bekijken’ to search through our image and film collection.
Archives: Use ‘Archieven doorzoeken’ to search through all our archives and collections. In our ‘Achievenoverzicht’ you will find a systematic overview of all the archives and collections at the Gelders Archief.
Scanning on Demand
An increasing number of the Gelders Archief’s records have so far been digitized and we are continuing to put records online through our Scanning on Demand service. This is a free service.
Please use our Scanning on Demand service by requesting scans of records with the scanning-on-demand-button (

We try to make the scans available on our website within three weeks of your request. You will receive a confirmation e-mail, and may then view and download the scans from the inventory online.
Visiting our reading room
Study original records
In our reading room, you can study/explore original records. You can request the records in advance from home through our website, or from our reading room by clicking on the documents-button next to the description of a record. Please see below:
Our reading room has free WiFi, a scanner and a copy machine at your disposal. Our experts will gladly help you with your research.
Opening hours

Thursday and Friday: 10:00-17:00. You can request documents until 4:15pm

Address and route
Our address is Westervoortsedijk 67-D, 6827 AT Arnhem. You can plan your visit by car (the entrance to our car park is at Mercatorweg) or by public transport.
