Welcome to the Gelders Archief! We manage hundreds of archives from and about the province of Gelderland. Our collection consists of more than 38 kilometres of archival material, over 18 million genealogical records and over 300.000 photos, drawings, prints and maps.
Our historical documents and search engine are only available in Dutch. However, more information and tips on how to find your way around our website and how to contact us with any questions can be found below.
Online research
Genealogy
Use ‘Personen zoeken’ to search in our genealogical database. This database contains civil registration certificates (birth, marriage, and death), population registers (inhabitants), and church books (baptisms, marriages, and burials) from the province of Gelderland. If you want to search through genealogical resources from all Dutch provinces, please visit www.OpenArch.nl. This website is available in English, French, and German.
Images
Use ‘Foto’s en films bekijken’ to search through our image and film collection.
Archives
Use ‘Archieven doorzoeken’ to search through all of our archival collections. In the ‘Achievenoverzicht’ you will find a systematic overview of the different collections.
Scanning on Demand
An ever increasing number of documents held by the Gelders Archief has been digitized. We continue to publish documents online through our free Scanning on Demand service.
Please use our Scanning on Demand service by requesting scans of records with the scanning on demand-button (
) next to the description of a record:
Is the Scanning on Demand button not visible? This means that the document cannot or may not be scanned. The most common reasons for this are extensive damage to the material and legislation.
We try to publish the scans on our website within three weeks after your request. As soon as the scans are published, you will receive a confirmation e-mail.
Visiting our reading room
Study original records
You can visit our reading room to view original documents. In preparation of your visit, you can order documents in advance on our website. To do so, you have to click on the document-button next to the description of a document. This ensures that the documents are ready for you when you arrive. You will be able to order more documents during your visit.
Our reading room has free WiFi, a scanner and a copy machine at your disposal. Our experts will gladly help you with your research.
Opening hours

Wednesday and Thursday: 10:00-17:00h. You can order documents until 16:15h.

Address and route
Our address is Westervoortsedijk 67-D, 6827 AT Arnhem. You can plan your visit by car (the entrance to our car park is at the Mercatorweg) or by public transport.
